Why NPS works well for long-term retirement investing

15 Oct 2026

When you’re in your 20s or 30s, retirement is probably the last thing on your mind. But that’s also when you have the biggest advantage when it comes to investing: time.

The challenge, however, isn’t just starting early. It’s staying invested for decades without dipping into your retirement savings along the way. One of the most underrated aspects of retirement investing is having money that’s not easily accessible. This forced discipline can make a huge difference over the long term.

That’s what makes the National Pension System (NPS) interesting. Apart from encouraging long-term investing, it has low costs and gives you the flexibility to choose how your money is allocated across equities, bonds, and other asset classes.

I think NPS is worth seriously considering for retirement planning, even without taking the tax benefits into account. Its low costs and the discipline it encourages can make a meaningful difference over decades.🙂

This video from Zero1 is a nice explainer on how NPS works, its tax benefits, investment and withdrawal options, and more.

If you want to learn more about NPS, we’re also hosting a Varsity Live session with Pension Box on 31st October (link in comments).
